South African photographer Pieter Hugo’s work focusing on contemporary Africa is now well-known around the world. For him, documentary photography is a “type of ecstatic experience where one looks at the pictures and one experiences truth, even if it’s not the truth of an accountant.” We talked with him a while back about his experience shooting Nigerian entertainers-cum-debt-collectors known for their pet hyenas, which the townfolk consider to be witches.

Hey, did you know that straight after discovering oxygen in 1776, Joseph Priestley moved to Birmingham and became a minister?
Me neither, but after looking at this set of pictures sent to us by our friend Alex Dean that sort of makes sense; in a very “Oh, I’m so tired of fresh air, I feel like moving to a place where children learn how to dumpster-dive before they know how to walk” kind of way.

At the first camp we found, the North Korean guards threatened us and tried to throw us out. Billy the Fish laughed—a great gold-toothed guffaw—and then smiled. “This is Russia,” he growled, eyes glinting. Motioning to the vast expanses around him, he declared, “This is mine.” Then to our camera crew, “Keep shooting. They can do nothing.” So we did.

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT IN THE GAZA STRIP - PART ONE
In 2007 we tried and failed to get into Gaza through the Israeli-controlled Erez Crossing. Back then the rival Palestinian factions of Hamas and Fatah were engaged in a bloody war for control of this tiny strip of land. Hamas won. When the post-Mubarak government of Egypt decided to start letting small numbers of folks into Gaza through their Rafah crossing, we knew it was our chance to finally get a rare glimpse of the embattled Gaza Strip and to see what life was like under the rule of Hamas.
